Who We Are

The Egyptian International Foundation for the Development of Laboratory Animal Science (EG-LAS) is a registered non-profit organization (No. 3644/2010). Through its network of specialized divisions, EG-LAS advances the ethical, scientific, and regulatory standards of laboratory animal care across Egypt and the region.

Our primary focus is supporting researchers, academic institutions, and pharmaceutical labs in building humane, compliant, and internationally recognized animal research programs.

Story of the Foundation

A rejected research paper due to the absence of ethical approval sparked a transformative journey for a Cairo University zoology student and Prof. Khadiga Gaafar. Driven by a commitment to humane animal care, they established Egypt’s first IACUC after gaining valuable guidance from Kathryn Wayne during a 2013 conference in Baltimore, leading to the creation of the first Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at Cairo University in 2014.

Their vision continued through the founding of EG-LAS, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a culture of care. This journey culminated in the establishment of Egypt’s first animal facility built according to international standards, earning AAALAC accreditation on its first visit in 2024 and becoming the first AAALAC-accredited facility in Egypt and the Middle East.
