Building a Culture of Care, Advancing Scientific Excellence
Story of the Foundation
It began with a question no one could answer: “Where is your IACUC approval?” For an Egyptian researcher whose osteoporosis research had earned international recognition, the absence of ethical animal-research oversight became the barrier between local science and global standards. That single moment sparked a movement.
Led by Prof. Khadija Gaafar, Cairo University established Egypt’s first Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee in 2014 — laying the foundation for a new scientific culture. From this vision, EG-LAS was founded to advance laboratory animal science, safeguard animal welfare, and cultivate a national Culture of Care. Its UResearch Animal Facility (URAF) soon followed, delivering internationally compliant research infrastructure — culminating in 2024, when URAF became the first AAALAC International–accredited facility in Egypt and the Middle East.
Because ethical care and scientific excellence have never been separate pursuits — they are how discovery earns the world’s trust

Who We Are
